I’ve always loved Ray Parker Jr and Raydio: those funny sleazy lyrics, the grungy synth bass, the ultra-simple arrangements, the effortless groove. Mark, Tony and I unconsciously put together this fab hommage, which allows me to get into some crazed soloing towards the end, with Mark powering it all along in his much-missed, inimitable way. “When I was just a schoolboy” – OK! (The lyrics were completely re-written by Richard for the song’s role in ‘A Model Girl’, where you’ll find it renamed ‘Everybody Loves A Party’, and I put on a toff voice to deliver it à la Stephen Ward. Click on the link and marvel at this transformation!)
- YOU GOT ME, MARLENE (Marek Black) 3:25

My tribute to one of the movie greats. Recorded a while ago, some of the vocal affectations make me feel quite queasy, but Martyn Ford’s brilliant arrangement, the outstanding playing of the Mountain Fjord orchestra, and a winsome soprano sax solo from Lol Coxhill inject the track with a fine emotional high. This was another song that was re-purposed for ‘A Model Girl’, where, given the story, it was not surprisingly renamed ‘You’ve Got Me, Christine’. Marlene ... Christine ... fickle, moi?

I LOVE this demo. The lyrics were amended and re-recorded, the track was re-mixed. But I always return to this original version, with its consummately easy vibe, led by Mark’s brilliant bass playing. Imagine it translated into Spanish and sung by Coolio Iglesias: “Esta noche, mi amor de juventud ha muerto!” ¡Ay, caramba, señorita!

A huge production by Martyn Ford, who also arranged and conducted. LOVE those BVs from the legendary
Barry St John, Joanne Williams and Doreen Chanter! And that’s King Crimson's Mike Giles kicking the drums along, the internationally famous Monica Huggett and Irvine Arditti among the violinists, all together with Hughie Burns (responsible for the outstanding acoustic guitar on ‘From Jesus To A Child’) noodling fably thoughout this UP! track to end all UP! tracks! (Shame about the crap lyrics. Ha ha!)

Bliss! So gooey and creamy! Another demo that’s since been remixed (with extra BVs added)/ re-recorded with various singers and new arrangements/ generally mucked about with ... and this original version – with its two major sonic glitches and an almighty mess of a piano chord near the end! - still knocks every other attempt to recreate ‘the magic’ into that proverbial cocked hat. Love Derek’s ultra-soulful synth lead soloing throughout ... “este Marek Black: hombre muy romántico, no?”
- HEARTBROKEN (Marek Black - Richard Alexander) 4:07

One of those demos that’s been re-recorded with several different vocalists, ‘Heartbroken’’s lyrics were adapted to enable it to become a crucial ballad in the musical, ‘A Model Girl’. (It was sung highly emotively with these alternative lyrics by Emma Williams, as Christine Keeler, after her break-up with John Profumo.) However, I’ve always loved this original demo. It’s had no backing vocals or guitars added. It’s had no fairy dust sprinkled on it. And it still includes the word ‘gotten’ (Mein Gott!). But it REALLY works, not least thanks to (what, him again?) Martin Dobson’s outstandingly sensitive soloing on the sax ...
